Teachers Share their Experiences While Living Abroad!

My Top 5 Blogs from 2014

Posted on Thu, Jan 01, 2015 @ 09:40 AM

This year has been one of the busiest years that I have had in a long time. Since I’ve been living and working in Korea for over the past 3 years, there have been so many adventures in both teaching and traveling that I have been lucky to take part in. With 2014 wrapping up, it seems best that I go ahead and share my favorite blogs that I’ve written!

  1. I have to start with this one. After working with ChungDahm my entire time living in Seoul, you make a lot of new friends and build many networks. Sometimes, you will meet other teachers or academy owners who will try to lure you away. When this happens to me, I need to take time and realize how lucky I am to have been with ChungDahm Academy. Although some teachers may think that their academy or place of teaching is the best, I still think that ChungDahm is the best fit for me.

  2. Living a healthier lifestyle - When you walk through the streets of Seoul, you will notice that the majority of Koreans are very fit. You can see ahjummas and ahjussis (older Korean men and women)  quickly race up the subway stairs. After seeing them beat me countless times, whether it's them walking up the staircase while I’m taking the escalator, I set in my mind that it was time to lose weight. Since living in Korea, I have lost almost 40 lbs in three years and have managed to keep it off! My favorite outdoor activity is going hiking. In Seoul, there are so many mountains that one can climb within the day. I think I am up to climbing 11 mountains around this city and the best part of it all, climbing is free! Here are my favorite mountains to climb if you are new beginner like how I once was.

  3. Making new friends - There are many great groups that you can join in order to make new friends. Some of these groups include The Seoul Expat Global Expats Meetup, Danny’s Party, and Good Time ROK. But one of my favorite memories comes from going to Lotte World with the other teachers through the ChungDahm Social Club. During Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), Chungdahm paid for almost 70 teachers to go to Lotte World Amusement Park. Not only did they do that, but they had many games for teachers to partake in for some great prizes. It was a great day for many of us to relax and get to know each other more.

  4. Teach and Travel - Although at ChungDahm, you may not get as many vacation days as you would like, there are still many opportunities to travel outside of the country. During our long vacations, and some of our long weekends, I was able to go to Taiwan, the Philippines, and Malaysia. I think my favorite trip however was the one I took to Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo has a rich culture, old and new blended together, just like living in Seoul.

  5. Eating - If you have never tried Korean food, you my friend are missing out. I love the fact that many of the meals here use fresh vegetables and feel very comforting. Especially during this winter season, eating with friends has become almost a daily ritual.

There are some many blogs that I have written and I hope that my readers can get a glimpse of what it is like to teach and travel while living in Seoul. Do you have a favorite blog? If you do, please leave a comment below! I wish you a healthy and happy 2015!

Teach in Korea!

After working for five years in banking, Marc decided that it was time for a change before he got too old. He left the stress from his 9-5 job to do something new and different. After coming to Korea with a group of buddies, he landed in the Gangdong Branch in Eastern Seoul. When he's not teaching and doing head instructor duties, he is out about traveling Korea, looking for the new, old, and undiscovered places to visit. Follow him on Twitter @geonmakku and on Instagram @geonmakku for the latest happenings in South Korea.
