If you teach in Korea long enough, you will realize how much Koreans are proud of their culture and history and because of this they do their best to preserve their ancient wonders. As of 2016, Korea has 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites. If a location is deemed to have cultural or physical significance, the UN will help to ensure that it remains protected. The nomination process can take years and only a certain amount of locations will be designated a World Heritage site in any given year. This year, I was invited by my Korean friends to participate in the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Settlement Site.

A few weeks ago, I happened upon information about Food Week Korea, an annual event held in Seoul, featuring food from all over the world. In case that doesn't already sound awesome, the part of this that really caught my attention was the promise of free samples. Eager to basically eat my way around the world, I wasted no time in getting signed up so I could attend the event.

Last week, I posted part one of my blogs on the annual Lotus Lantern Festival, thrown in honor of Buddha's Birthday in Seoul. After we spent some time last weekend walking around Jogyesa and taking billions of photos of the lanterns, it was time for my favorite part of the festival: the Lantern Parade.

Before moving to South Korea to Teach English, the only K-pop I knew of was Psy and his HUGE hit, "Gangnam Style". I had no idea just how big this genre of music was until moving here. Now that I'm here almost a year I can tell you that Korean pop, or K-POP is a huge part of the culture, at least for the younger generation. In fact, Korean music in general has such a big impact on the people here, or at the very least, the students I teach. The other English teachers like it too (It's kind of a guilty pleasure!)

Spring!! Sweet Spring! Our salvation. The white of winter melts away, and we are left with so much! So much … free time. Sure, you had plenty of free time in winter, but it was cold outside. Now that excuse is thankfully not excusable. So what’s an expat to do? Here are five happenings in South Korea during the next month.

There have been a lot of festivals recently in Korea, and this one caught my eye especially because of the electric lights. The Busan Port Lighting Festival took place on Songdo Beach from November 8th to November 17th. Songdo is one of the seven beaches in Busan that I had not made it over to yet, so I thought I should definitely check it out when they have their lights on.

Korea has a real knack and penchant for festivals, which is something I've really come to love about living in this country. It seems like nearly every weekend there's something going on, and I've tried my hardest to check out as much as I can. But as November rolls back around, the Cheonggyecheon stream in Seoul lights up with fancy lanterns, signaling the start of one of my favorite festivals in Korea.

A couple of weeks ago in one of my previous blogs I mentioned that Korea plays host to many festivals, and most of them are free to attend! Well the past month has been no exception. My next few blogs will focus on some of the festivals I have attended, culminating with the International Fireworks Festival in Busan at the end of the month. This blog, however, will look at the Gimbap Festival in Daegu, which a few English teachers and I attended two weekends ago. It was quite the sight!
