Explore Kyoto While Teaching in Korea

Posted on Tue, Feb 07, 2017 @ 04:17 PM

When you are teaching in Korea and have a 3 day weekend working for ChungDahm or April, it's always worth your while to take a mini vacation if you can afford it. Now that I am splitting my time between teaching ChungDahm and April Academy, I am getting more time off. Knowing that Lunar New Year would be coming up, my friend and I realized how expensive those tickets would be. So we decided to go on our trip the weekend before the major holiday. She had never been to Osaka or Kyoto so we decided to see if we could spend one day in Osaka and one day in Kyoto. My advice would be to not do it. A one day trip to either place is not nearly enough time to soak in what each city has to offer. There is so much to see and do in both places, you will not do either city its justice. Many teachers love to go to Osaka because it is only a 2 hour flight from Incheon International Airport (ICN) to Kansai International Airport (KIX). The last time I took this trip, we spent a full day at Universal Studios Japan (Osaka) and toured the following day. However, many teachers don't realize how close, how beautiful, and how historic Kyoto is. Here was my to-do list for traveling to Kyoto.

Planning a Trip to Tokyo? Make Sure To Visit These Top Attractions

Posted on Tue, Feb 23, 2016 @ 11:56 AM

As soon as I found out about the Lunar New Year holiday, I was excited to plan a trip to Tokyo with friends for our first ChungDahm vacation. The Lunar New Year holiday  (Seollal) granted us a 4-day weekend to explore Tokyo.  One of the perks of teaching in Korea is that Tokyo is a mere 2 hour flight from Seoul. Flying from Gimpo into Haneda was the best option for us, as Gimpo is a mere express stop from my place in Seoul, and Haneda is the closest airport to the center of Tokyo. We booked our flights online a month before the trip, through Orbitz. However, traveling anywhere during the Lunar New Year in Korea is expensive, and we ended up paying quite a bit for our tickets (around $500). If you are planning on traveling during holidays in Korea, I would recommend arranging transportation as far in advance as possible, and taking your time researching the cheapest route possible! It is possible to get a round trip to Tokyo from Seoul for as cheap as $150... obviously not during peak traveling periods. We flew ANA and had a good experience.

Got 2 Days Off? Visit Osaka While Teaching in Korea

Posted on Wed, Jul 01, 2015 @ 11:43 AM

While teaching in Korea, I have had the great pleasure of traveling all over Asia and that is one of the main reasons why I can’t leave here. I love to travel! Unexpectedly, because of the MERS outbreak, a lot of schools and academies had canceled classes for safety reasons. My branch was one of them and we randomly got two days off in the middle of the week. On a whim, a couple of friends and I decided to fly to Osaka, Japan. Here are the top 3 things that you should do when visiting Osaka

Many people wonder what it is like to teach English in South Korea, they want to know how many hours you work each week and what the children are like. Even in South Korea, my friends ask me what it is like working for ChungDahm Institute, which is one of Korea's best known Private English Academies. This blog will explain a typical 13 week term at ChungDahm. Each year there are four terms; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each term lasts 13 weeks and there are no mid-term breaks between each term.

Visit Japan while Teaching English in South Korea

Posted on Thu, Nov 13, 2014 @ 10:01 AM

When I was in my final year of university in Ireland I had decided that I would like to travel. I wanted to see Asia in particular, as I had not been there before. I wanted to see as many countries as possible.  So I thought, what better way to travel than by teaching English abroad. I saw a posting on my university job board advertising an English Teaching job in South Korea.  I had never even thought about visiting South Korea when I was looking into traveling. I had looked at Thailand, China, Japan and even Malaysia but not South Korea. 18 months later I can honestly say it’s been one of the best decisions I have made in my life. South Korea is an amazing country.

Tokyo Time! Shopping Outside South Korea

Posted on Wed, Mar 05, 2014 @ 07:44 PM

Although I enjoyed the peace and quiet of Kyoto, I was eager to throw myself into the hustle and bustle of the city of 35 million people, Tokyo. I had heard a lot about Tokyo, about the all night attitude and the politeness of the Japanese people. I had also heard that they speak very little English in Japan in comparison to Korea, so I was both eager to explore and also a little nervous.

Japan is very close to Korea, you can take a ferry or hop on a three hour plane ride to get there. When I first signed on with Chungdahm I promised myself that I would make it over to Japan to expand my horizons even further. I was able to keep this promise over winter vacation!

An Excellent Fall Getaway: Travel to Japan

Chungdahm, my employer, gives its teachers a random week off in the year to do anything we choose. My week off came a couple weeks ago. I decided to jump across the sea to Japan. I visited Tokyo about a year ago, but I had such an amazing time, I had to go back. So on the Monday of my week off, I flew into Osaka.
