Having lived in and around Seoul for 3 years during my time teaching in Korea, the same places continually pop up. While they are beautiful, cool, and/or fun, there are just some places that aren’t popular that become special. Maybe there isn’t anything particular that draws other people to them, but when you’re adventuring in a new country, there are some experiences that just draw you in. Below are are my top five places I like to visit in Seoul. Perhaps they’re not popular, but they are really something unique and spectacular. All five places are great, and hopefully I can persuade you to that idea.

When people conjure up thoughts of Korea, many people assume that Korea is all about its Kpop music and soju drinking lifestyle. However, the one reason why I enjoy living in Korea is because there is something for everyone. If you enjoy outdoor activities to nightlife partying, Korea has something for you. But one thing you must know is that Korea is a very trendy place. Top trends in 2015 included honey butter chips, multi-colored hair, and flavored soju. So for in 2016 one of the top new trends is the up and coming art scene and one the best displays of this at the D Museum. If you are interested in seeing funky and modern art exhibits, then you must visit this place while teaching in Korea.

I love to travel! The opportunity to travel is one of the main reasons I’ve stayed in Korea for almost 4 years. Traveling can be a weekend jaunt to a nearby country or a more in depth trip between teaching jobs or contracts. Local travel is just as interesting and there are many suburbs to explore around Seoul via the subway or express bus service. Here are my top picks for a quick day trip outside of Seoul.

Seoul is a city that is designed for cyclists. Koreans cleverly designed the1988 Olympics' biking and running trails, and sporting facilities with the future in mind. Unlike any other Olympic host country, Korea continues to make full use of their Olympic facilities. Because of this, Seoul is covered in outdoor trails and bike-friendly lanes that have created a cycling culture among Seoul Koreans.

Korea is one of the top consumers for make-up/beauty products for both men and women. Unfortunately, buying all of these things can add up quickly and hurt your wallet. Luckily, if you live in Seoul, you can take advantage of the Han River, surrounding mountains, and numerous parks nearby to stay in shape and maintain a healthy lifestyle. When I first came to teach in Korea, I was really scared because all I knew was that I would be placed in Seoul. After arriving here, I started asking around where is Gangdong and unfortunately for me, no one had heard of this area. I really started freaking out and I even thought about quitting. However, I am glad I decided to stay because living in Gangdong has been one of the highlights of my teach abroad experience.
