It’s summer! I really enjoy outdoor activities, trips out of Seoul, and extreme activities. I’ve already explored three caves, rode three bike rails, taken a scenic cable car, river rafted, climbed a few mountains, paraglided and more in Korea’s countryside. On my most recent one day trip, I only had only one activity in mind! I wanted cross bungee jumping off my bucket list! It was a somewhat spontaneous trip.

Recently, I was finally able to convince a few of my friends to go on a DMZ tour with me. I say ‘finally’, because going to the DMZ isn’t particularly popular among Koreans. My male friends in particular said they dislike their time serving their military service, thus they whined saying “why do I have to go back” when I would suggest it. Still, I got my way!

As summer is quickly approaching, I wanted to share with everyone my favorite places along the Han River. The Han River splits northern and southern Seoul in half and runs into the neighboring provinces making it in total about 494 kilometers (307 miles). I don’t ever plan to bike the full length, but there are plenty of places near and around Seoul that you can get to if you ride a bike. Korea has put an amazing system of bike lanes that run all over the country as the longest trail runs from Seoul all the way Busan which is on the southeastern coast. For the vicinity around Seoul, you do not need a mountain bike as a road bike will do just fine. When I began teaching in Korea I was able to buy a decent road bike for 220,000 won at a bike shop near my home. There are so many bike shops here in Korea, so don’t be afraid to bargain. There are also bike rentals along major parts of the Han where it only costs a few 1000 won/hour. Here are my favorite spots to go to while biking on the Han River.

One of my favorite holidays back in America was the 4th of July. Thanks to Facebook’s memory reminders, I realized how much I was able to travel during those long holiday weekends. Although I wasn’t able to travel far from Seoul, I was able to do some fun activities to celebrate this holiday.

I love to travel! The opportunity to travel is one of the main reasons I’ve stayed in Korea for almost 4 years. The Lunar New Year holiday (Seollal) is one of the two major holidays that most ChungDahm teachers will be able to take off. Because of that, most teachers will try to vacation outside of the country. Last year, while I was on my Lunar New Year break, I met up with my parents and we went to two popular destination in Asia - Hong Kong and Macau.

Now that the autumn season is quickly passing us by, I thought it was best to share my last experience hiking in South Korea for this year. Usually when I go hiking, I like to stay near the Seoul area but this time a couple of teachers and I decided to go hiking near Daejeon. Daejeon is the fifth largest city in South Korea and is known as the ‘Silicon Valley’ of South Korea. Here, you can find KAIST (Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) University where many of my students aspire to attend. On a side note, KAIST is one of the top universities on the Korean peninsula.

I enjoy quirky, and I enjoy silly. Living in Korea, I've had countless opportunities to embrace both of these, but I've found the grandest display of ridiculous to definitely be in the form of the "trick" art museums. I've visited two different ones, and I must say -- if you enjoy acting like a kid and posing for outrageous photos, then this is a place for you.

After sharing my experiences in Tokyo with the friends that I have met through ChungDahm, I thought it would be best to highlight some of the other vacation destinations outside of Korea. Some of these we were able to do over a wild and hectic weekend, while the last one, we were able to do over a long holiday. Again, these trips are all possible, but it is definitely beneficial if you live by a major international airport.
